Future Science Group marks International Women’s Day 2020
To celebrate International Women’s Day 2020, Future Science Group (FSG), a progressive scientific and medical publisher, is convening a multidisciplinary panel to discuss gender equality in science with a #TalkIWD Twitter chat. FSG is committed to gender parity and celebrating the achievements of women in STEM.
According to UNESCO data , less than 30% of researchers around the world and only 35% of students enrolled in STEM or STEM-related fields are female. However, studies have indicated that a more gender-balanced society would have health and economic benefits . International Women’s Day (IWD) was first held in 1911 to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and, since then, has encouraged women’s equality and gender balance.
This year’s IWD theme of #EachForEqual advocates collective individualism to effect a positive impact on society as a whole. As Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist, once explained, "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights."
This live, one-hour Twitter event will take place on 6 March at 3pm GMT / 10am EST and panellists include female scientists from across an array of disciplines from health economics, neurology and microbiology: Andrea Brand (Cambridge University, UK), Camille Ribolzi [MP1] (3D LifePrints, UK), Dalia Dawoud (NICE, UK), Marley Van Dyke (Northern Arizona University, AZ, USA), Nathasia Mudiwa (University of Luxembourg), Simón(e) Sun (New York University, NY, USA) and Sylvie Garneau-Tsodikova (University of Kentucky, KY, USA). The discussion will be initiated by FSG under the handle @futuresciencegp.
Marley Van Dyke commented: “International Women’s Day is a day of celebration and acknowledgment of how far we have come and our achievements. It is also a day to bring awareness to the continued inequality and injustice we face on a daily basis.”
The panellists will be sharing their own experiences, insights and tips on a range of topics including the benefits and barriers to more women in STEM, what more STEM fields can do to encourage women to enter and stay, and their STEM role models. The #TalkIWD hashtag can be used to follow the chat, as well as to pose a question to the panellists or share your own opinions or experiences.
