International Women’s Day 2019 – Join our #TalkIWD Twitter chat 

 

March 8 marks International Women’s Day, an annual day calling for a more gender-balanced world. This year, Future Science Group are hoping to promote the conversation around gender equality in STEM with our #TalkIWD Twitter Chat! This one-hour event will take place on 8 March at 3pm GMT / 10am EST; hosted by the @futuresciencegp handle we will be joined by a fantastic panel of scientists from all stages of their careers sharing their thoughts on gender equality in science. 

  

In addition to opinions from our panel we’d love to hear from you! If you would like to pose a question, or discuss your opinion, please let us know using the hashtag #TalkIWD. We’re excited to join the conversation around International Women’s Day and how we can #BalanceforBetter, so get involved!

Emma is a Health and Care Research Wales Fellow based at Cardiff University (UK). Her current research explores whether cognitive training is feasible for people impacted by Huntington’s disease. Emma is an advocate for public engagement and science communication. She was awarded the Charles Darwin lecture at the 2018 British Science Festival and she has also spoken at the Hay Festival, Soapbox Science and Pint of Science. Emma aims to inspire others, communicating science in fun and interactive ways so that people learn something new and feel confident and able to engage with scientists.

Taylor Walker is a Biomedical Engineering Master’s of Engineering candidate at Cornell University (NY, USA), focusing on drug delivery and cell & tissue engineering. Taylor’s research efforts promote health equity by identifying areas for intervention and analyzing sociocultural factors that impact health outcomes, particularly in mental health and genetic disease. She aims to utilize the human microbiome as a method of drug delivery that increases health access, and she will ultimately pursue an MD-PhD in search of applicable treatments.

Balkees Abderrahman, MD is the Dallas/Ft. Worth Living Legend Fellow of Cancer Research at MD Anderson Cancer Center (TX, USA), and a PhD trainee under model ‘Individuals of Very High Quality’ at the University of Leeds (UK). She is also the author of ‘Hormones and cancer, Oxford Textbook of Cancer Biology’, ‘Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), estrogen receptor and breast cancer, Cancer Drug Discovery and Development’, ‘Steroid receptors in breast cancer, The Breast: Comprehensive Management of Benign and Malignant Diseases’, ‘Love at the Gate’, and ‘Oliver and the Rock’. Balkees is also a contributor at Science, Nature, JAMA Oncology, ASCO Post, The Hill, The Huffington Post, US News and World Report, The Nation and The Independent. Additionally, she is involved as a correspondent for the UK Royal Pharmaceutical Society and is a Columnist for Oncology Central. Her achievements also include being a Finalist for the Outstanding Youth Award at the United Nations from over 86 countries for “Her outstanding work in tackling some of our greatest social, economic, and environmental challenges”.

Amy Alexander is a Senior Biomedical Engineer in the Mayo Clinic Department of Radiology’s Anatomic Modeling Lab in Rochester (MN, USA). In her role, Amy converts 2-D radiological images into 3-D models and patient-specific surgical cutting guides. These life-size, patient-specific models and guides help surgeons from different specialties prepare for complex procedures. Additionally, these 3D prints form a communication bridge for patients regarding their personal surgical plan. Amy holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE; WI, USA) and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from MSOE’s Rader School of Business. She has served on the SME Medical 3D Printing Workgroup for over three years, is a member of the Radiological Society of North America’s 3D Printing in Medicine Special Interest Group, and is certified in Additive Manufacturing through SME. She is an active member of RSNA, HIMSS, and SME.

Lisa began her scientific career at the University of Leicester (UK) with a degree in Chemistry, and it was there that she discovered she had a passion for research. She then embarked on a PhD in the Chemistry department at the University of Cambridge (UK) and spent her time designing new dyes to improve the study of biological systems at the single-molecule level. Lisa is continuing her PhD research as an EPSRC postdoctoral fellow researcher and focusing on developing novel tools to combat neurodegenerative diseases.
