Bioanalysis Zone announces winner of Rising Star Award 2021

Bioanalysis Zone, the knowledge hub for the bioanalytical industry, has named Zhuo Chen (GSK, PA, USA) the 2021 winner of the Bioanalysis Rising Star Award (BRSA; formerly the New Investigator Award).

The BRSA is an annual award that recognizes and promotes the work of talented early-career scientists, offering researchers a springboard to help establish themselves in the exciting world of bioanalysis.

This year’s winner, Zhuo Chen, Exploratory Biomarker Assay Sr. Analyst at GSK, was nominated by John T Mehl (GSK, PA, USA), who commented: “Zhuo has established himself as an emerging leader in the field of bioanalysis. From the very start of his GSK career, he demonstrated a high degree of innovation that is broad in scope. An early success was establishment of HRMS as a platform for improved sensitivity and selectivity for low-level peptide quantification.”

On receiving the award, Zhuo commented: “It is my great honor to receive this year’s BRSA, and I am very grateful to my family, colleagues and friends for their continued support. I would like to thank the award sponsors – Waters Corporation and Bioanalysis Zone – for this opportunity to share my work with the bioanalysis community.”

As the winner of the BRSA, Zhuo will present his work at the 14th European Bioanalysis Forum (EBF) Open Symposium, held in Barcelona, Spain from 24−26 November 2021. He also receives a 1-year subscription to Bioanalysis and US$1000, courtesy of award sponsors Waters Corporation (MA, USA), a leading provider of laboratory solutions and software in separations science, mass spectrometry and thermal analysis.

Naamah Maundrell, Editor-in-Chief, Bioanalysis Zone, added: “This year has continued to challenge the bioanalytical community with ongoing COVID-19–related disruptions. Therefore, it has been a privilege to share good news and to celebrate bioanalytical efforts. I would like to congratulate Zhuo and all of this year’s nominees on their inspiring work.”

Zhuo won the public vote after four finalists were shortlisted by the judges. The other finalists were Francis O’Reilly (Technische Universität Berlin, Germany), Jugal Suthar (University College London, UK) and Sen Cheng (WuXi AppTec, Shanghai, China).

Videos introducing the research of each finalist are available to view at www.bioanalysis-zone.com/awards.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2022 Bioanalysis Rising Star Award – contact Naamah Maundrell directly ([email protected]) to submit a nomination.
