Authors publishing in our hybrid journals can opt for our open access option (by default a CC BY-NC-ND license), allowing unrestricted access to the online version of their article. The open access option is available for all article types except Drug Evaluation & Device Evaluation articles.
For information regarding the default license of our fully open access journals, please refer to the relevant journal webpage.
All articles are subject to our standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit. Authors are welcome to wait until acceptance before deciding on the open access option.
Fees and Payment
The open access option fee varies by journal as follows:
NB. This option is available for all article types except Drug, Device and Vaccine Evaluation articles.
*Plus VAT where applicable. #Fee of $850/$485 only applies to content that is not reviewed externally, e.g., editorials, commentaries and interviews.
Prices are in US Dollars.
Discounts are available for authors publishing in the subscription journals who have also opted for the Accelerated Publication option. This discount is not to be used in conjunction with any other offer.
Authors are required to complete a license form and payment form. The license form provides authors the opportunity to choose the copyright holder and to disclose any open access mandates they must meet, and includes an agreement whereby authors are assigned copyright but license exclusive rights to the publisher. This includes the exclusive right for the publisher to grant permission to re-use the article where the user’s needs are not covered by the license attached to the article.
The publication fee is charged at the point the article is accepted and payment in full should be paid within 30 days (preferably by credit card) by the author or other funding body. Articles will be made open access once payment has been received. Authors not paying by credit card may request to be invoiced in Pounds Sterling or Euros at the prevailing equivalent rate (using www.xe.com). The source of funding for open access fees should be included in the Financial & Competing Interests Disclosure statement.
Open access policy compliance
All Future Science Group journals endeavor to meet all green or gold open access mandates, including those of the Wellcome Trust, NIH and COAF.
Authors publishing open access and in journals with a default CC-BY-NC-ND license who require a CC-BY license will be able to request that license when completing their open access agreement form. A CC-BY license will be granted provided the mandate is a requirement.
For mandates that require deposit in PubMed Central such as those of the NIH and Wellcome Trust we will also arrange for the final published version to be deposited into PubMed Central and UK PubMed Central.
For any queries regarding open access mandates, please contact us via the form below.
Use by commercial ‘for-profit’ organizations
On choosing the open access option, authors sign an exclusive license agreement where authors have copyright but license exclusive rights in their article to the publisher. This includes the right for the publisher to make and authorize commercial use. At Future Science Group use of open access option articles (excluding those published under a CC-BY license) for commercial purposes is not permitted. However, support for free access is available to third parties subject to the appropriate permission fees.
Commercial purposes include:
Copying or downloading of articles, or linking to such articles for further redistribution, sale or licensing
Copying, downloading or posting by a site or service that incorporates advertising with such content
The inclusion or incorporation of article content in other works or services (other than normal quotations with an appropriate citation) that is then available for sale or licensing, for a fee (for example, a compilation produced for marketing purposes, inclusion in a sales pack)
Use of article content (other than normal quotations with appropriate citation) by for-profit organizations for promotional purposes
Linking to article content in e-mails redistributed for promotional, marketing or educational purposes
Use for the purposes of monetary reward by means of sale, resale, license, loan, transfer or other form of commercial exploitation such as marketing products.
For any reuse of open access content published by Future Science Group outside of those allowed by the copyright license applied, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org in the first instance.
